Shiatsu is non-invasive and you should feel entirely comfortable and relaxed throughout.

Though some pressure points may be sensitive, the treatment as a whole should not be a painful or uncomfortable experience — otherwise you will not be able to relax, and it is only in a state of total relaxation that the body’s energy can be harmonised.

It is worth noting that practitioners from different training backgrounds may well have different styles of working. For instance, practitioners trained in the Namikoshi style of shiatsu may well tend to have a firmer, more dynamic and physical style than those trained in the Zen style, which predominates in the UK.

The energetic sensations experienced by people vary widely — some people never actually feel the energy moving at all; most feel a wonderful floating sensation, or pleasurable tingling sensations flowing up and down their body. Very occasionally shaking or twitching can be experienced as the energy moves — this can be a little disconcerting, but is nothing to worry about.
