How is Shiatsu applied?

Thumbing down a leg meridian

Shiatsu is a safe, gentle therapy that is carried out through clothing, usually lying on a padded mat on the floor. However, if your physical condition does not permit working on the floor, shiatsu can be adapted to any position you are comfortable in and carried out in a chair or lying on a couch.

It is closely related to acupuncture in its aims and history, but does not use needles. Instead, the practitioner applies pressure to points on the meridians or energy channels using primarily the thumbs, fingers, hands or elbows, but also the knees or feet. Stretching techniques are used to stimulate the flow of the energy along the meridians and to increase flexibility and improve well-being.
