What is Shiatsu?

Shiatsu is a Japanese therapy. The word shi-atsu literally translates as ‘finger pressure’.

It is rooted in over 4000 years of oriental medical tradition, and combines this with modern understanding of anatomy and physiology.

At the root of oriental medicine is “Ki” in Japanese (pronounced kee) or “Qi” or “Chi” in Chinese (pronounced chee). This is the body’s vital energy. It flows around the body in meridians or energy channels.

The aim of shiatsu is to stimulate this energy to smooth its flow, and in the process remove any imbalances, blockages or deficiencies — which tend to manifest in health or emotional problems.

Shiatsu tries to harmonise the flow of energy throughout the whole person: mind, body and spirit.

Stimulating the body’s energy will help your own immune system and enhance your body’s natural ability to heal itself.
